Hidden Secrets by Nicole De La Cruz
The Pub Series #1
Both have a past they wish they could change, but now they can have a possible future together. As long as hidden secrets don’t keep them apart…
Hidden Secrets is book #1 in The Pub Series and the first book I have read by this author, I was lucky enough to be gifted a copy of this book to read for Gemma Reads Too Much.
I had high expectations of Hidden Secrets, the blurb sounds fun and sweet and I was super intrigued what the secrets were going to be.
I like Scarlett she’s a sweet. if a little naive girl who gets screwed over by her cheating ex. She is obviously fairly jaded by this and that historically her father cheated on her mom and then left Scarlett and her family to move in with his affair. OK so yeah if Scarlett was a bit of a man-hater, it would be understandable. Personally to me it just seemed that Scarlett was a bit sad and needed to be rescued.
Along comes our British knight in shining armour!! Scarlett and Kyle have their broom cupboard meet cute and bam we have one seriously loved up couple.
So far so good!! Now this book is a little wordy and the writing is at times uncomfortable and more essay than conversational novel. But Scarlett and Kyle are cute enough together for me to overlook it.
My problems start with all of the other characters…..
Amy obviously has some serious self worth issues and from the dozens of hints Scarlett drops Amy didn’t have a very happy home life with her family. I didn’t hate her I just felt like she overshadowed Scarlett in every scene they were in together.
Sawyer… good lord what a nightmare!!! He is Scarlett’s brother and id guess at a possible drug problem??? His mood swings were insane and apparently he has a massive 10 year crush on Amy. He puts all of his issues down to his dad having an affair and leaving his mom. This apparently caused him to leave a very promising baseball career. Three words Sawyer GROW A PAIR!!!
Travis is Kyle’s best friend and a bit of a ladies’ man, the author hints that he is cheating on his long term girlfriend which would make him a total dick!!!
Bella and Clive they are Kyle’s siblings I’m not even sure what to say just NIGHTMARE!!
The only periphery character that I actually liked was Hunter he was lush lol!!!
This book has all the bones to be great but for me the outer characters drama all overshadowed Scarlett and Kyle’s love story. I waited for something to happen for their ‘secrets’ to be revealed but there wasn’t any real secrets. Scarlett and Kyle have a weird misunderstanding that was daft and easily resolved but it kind of felt like a wah, wah, wah moment when I was expecting a life altering dramatic secret.
Scarlett and Kyle were the saving grace for this book, they were cute endearing and heading towards their HEA from the get go.
This book was just OK for me; Hidden Secrets gets 3 stars from me.
