Heat by Penny Reid
Elements of Chemistry Part 2
Elements of Chemistry: HEAT is part 2 of a 3 part series (65k word novel) and ends in a cliffhanger.
**Blurb contains spoilers if you haven’t read Elements of Chemistry: ATTRACTION**
Four days left.
Private beach (…and boat).
Not so invisible girl.
And maybe less of a jerk-faced bully than originally thought.
What’s the worst (or the best) that could happen?
Kaitlyn is finding life outside of the science cabinet of obscurity to be quite illuminating …and so are her pants.
When things heat up between Kaitlyn Parker and Martin—previously known as the jerk-faced bully—Sandeke, she places her trust in the one person she never thought capable of earning it, let alone keeping it safe. Fortunately or unfortunately for Kaitlyn, where she gives her trust she can’t help but also give her heart.
But how will the world beyond the sanctuary of their newfound connection react to their relationship? Soon senators, chinless billionaires, and elements beyond Martin and Kaitlyn’s control want to weigh in on the young couple’s future.
Navigating the chaotic inferno of new love might be more than Kaitlyn bargained for, and much, much more than her trust—or her heart—can handle.
Heat is part two in the Elements of Chemistry Series, I was gifted an ARC of this book to read for Gemma Reads Too Much.
As a blogger I read and review between 30-40 books a month, I have a meticulous reading schedule that I am obsessively compulsive about sticking too. I NEVER read books before they are scheduled and I mean that has literally never happened.
I read Part One of this series yesterday(12th April), it was great I really enjoyed it and I tweeted Penny Reid to let her know I thought it was great and that I was really looking forward to Heat the next instalment. She replied saying that my ARC should be on its way to me (cue excited victory dance!!). I patiently waited all day checking my email and kindle for my ARC to pop up but alas it didn’t (damn you UK time difference), until this morning and there it was sitting waiting in my inbox.
So what did I do well I only bloody well read it!!!!
I actually couldn’t not read it, it was on my kindle taunting me saying read me read me lol
Heat is a brilliant continuation of what is quickly becoming my new obsession; sometimes novella series lose their shine for me when the second part doesn’t quite meet up to my expectations. But if possible I think Heat actually just lifted the bar even higher.
I just love Kaitlyn she really develops as a character in this instalment and I embraced the highs and lows she felt. At times she does feel sheltered and naive to an extreme but I think that’s just part of her charm, she’s so refreshingly honest and almost brash.
She should be weird and uncomfortable, and this should make her difficult to relate to but instead I found I just wanted her to be ok, to truly explore her feelings for Martin and to live a little outside of her ordered, regimented lifestyle.
We get a bit of an insight into Martin in this book and what an eye opener that was, I liked him before when he was just a jerk face bully but now I adore the broken, shy boy who was never allowed to be a child.
It’s a shame that I’ve gone from swooning over his bossy sexiness to wanting to just give him a big ole hug. I mean don’t get me wrong he’s still swoon worthy especially when he’s trying to get Kaitlyn to talk dirty.
This book adds the extra dimension of family and the pressures from having well known public figures as parents. To be honest I disliked both Martin and Kaitlyn’s parents just for very different reasons. Martin’s dad is just very obviously a nasty piece of work, evil spews out of his every pore and I instantly hated him. But I feel like he is the obvious villain, now for me Kaitlyn’s mom was the more dastardly of the two. She killed with kindness she left the choice up to Kaitlyn but also managed to be manipulative and passive aggressive whilst doing it, I actually feel like what she did was worse than Martins dad being openly an asshole.
Kaitlyn and Martin have off the charts chemistry even I felt a little hot under the collar from all of the chemistry sparking between them. But I still loved the tentative love and desire they felt for each other it was sweet and beautiful.
This book ends with a cliffhanger and as I am now obsessed with this series I feel like I’m going to get withdrawals if I don’t find out what happens next like right NOW!!!
Heat gets 5 stars from me I LOVED IT!!
About Penny Reid
SEX! It all started with sex, between my parents. Personally I don’t like thinking about it, but whatever works for you is a-ok with me. No judgment. The sex happened in California and much of my life also occurred in that state until I moved from the land of nuts (almonds), wine, silicon… boobs, and heavy traffic to the southeast US. Like most writers I like to write, but let’s get back to sex. Eventually I married and gave birth to 2 small people-children (boy-6, girl-4 as of this writing).
By day I’m a biomedical researcher with focus on rare diseases. By night I’m a knitter, sewer, lino block carver, fabric printer, soap maker, and general crafter. By the wee hours of the morning or when I’m intoxicated I love to listen to the voices in my head and let them tell me stories. I hope you enjoy their stories.
