The Sullivans, a family of hard-working Irish lawyers, came from nothing and built a life they can be proud of. The Deschanels amassed incredible wealth by siding with the North during the Civil War, betraying their people. Both New Orleans families have a dark and rich history, painted with secrets, treachery, and colorful, supernatural abilities.
The House of Crimson and Clover unravels the mysteries surrounding both families, pulling us further into their tangled, enigmatic lives.
The House of Crimson and Clover series consists of five volumes. I was gifted a copy of the whole boxset of the books to read for Gemma Reads Too Much.
I enjoy supernatural/paranormal/fantasy books, I don’t read that many of them but as long as they have some romance elements I’m a happy bunny.
This series is not a fluff romance….. I mean like NOT AT ALL!!
There are romance elements but it’s a strange kind of romance and defiantly not your typical hearts and flowers all consuming love story.
This series is a proper supernatural epic!!!
Think more along the lines of Lord of The Rings than Twilight.
My recommendation to anyone purchasing this boxset is to break it up into bitesize chunks. I made the mistake of reading the entire 5 volumes back to back and honestly I think it affected my overall reading experience.
This series is a heavy read and took some serious concentration on my parts to understand the plot and back stories. There are so many characters, back stories and sub plots that truthfully it was information overload.
At the start of this series I really would have appreciated a glossary because so many non human words were used and at times I struggled to understand their meaning and context.
This series sort of meanders slowly then has flashes of breakneck speed that pull you in and engage the reader only then to slow back down to meander again.
At times this series is really quite sad and I found my mood after I finished it to be a mixture of relief and pensive thoughts. I definitely allowed myself to get absorbed in some moments but this series is just sooooo long.
This House of Crimson & Clover is well written and the author is obviously a Tolkien fan because there is a definite Lord of The Rings vibe.
This series is a true epic but I’m more of a Fifty Shades of Grey than a War and Peace fan and unfortunately this just wasn’t my cup of tea.
I think had I of read each individual story with a gap in-between I might have been swept away with the fantasy world. But this was just too many words and just too heavy going for me.
The House of Crimson & Clover Series gets 3 stars from me.
